Farewell Message from Fred Goddard

Farewell Message from Fred Goddard

“La paz no es solamente la ausencia de la guerra, sino, es la solidaridad entre los hermanos y las hermanas.”

Graffiti on a wall in Bolivia

I remember seeing the above quote many years ago, long before I joined MPI. It states that peace is not just the absence of war, rather, it is solidarity between brothers and sisters. This has been a guiding message for me as I have tried to be in solidarity with those with whom I live and work in whatever context and culture and has extended as much as possible to be in solidarity with our environment in order to work toward a holistic peace.

After ten years, I decided to retire from my work with MPI as of the end of January 2024. It was a difficult decision, made in part so that I could spend more time with Jet, my spouse and life partner, who already retired. I also felt that with Chris Vertucci leaving as director, it was time for the next generation to bring MPI into the future.

Statement on the Mindanao State University Bombing

The Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute Foundation, Inc. (MPI) expresses its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims, as well as their families, relatives, and friends, following the tragic incident that unfolded on the morning of December 3, 2023, at Mindanao State University Main Campus Marawi (MSU Marawi).

MPI strongly condemns the act of terror that resulted in the loss of innocent lives as a result of the bomb explosion while a Catholic mass service was taking place in the MSU Marawi Gym. Such heinous acts starkly contradict the principles of peace, harmony, and respect for human life, causing profound pain and suffering to individuals and communities affected by this tragedy.

In times of crisis, misinformation and rumors can spread rapidly, leading to unnecessary panic and confusion. It is crucial to rely on credible news outlets, official statements, and trusted authorities to stay informed and make well-informed decisions. Maintaining calm, seeking accurate information, and taking proactive measures are imperative in navigating these challenging times.

As peacebuilders, let us stand together, offer support, and promote understanding to demonstrate resilience and unity in the face of adversity. The strength of our collective response can serve as a beacon of hope and healing for our communities.
