Description: |
This is an initial and partial report on violent incidents happening in the territories of various indigenous peoples in Mindanao. The dominant narrative about the situation in these IP territories is that cases of extrajudicial killings of IPs, illegal arrests, taking of political prisoners, incidents of forced evacuation affecting thousands of tribal people, and slapping of trumped up charges in court against IP leaders were perpetrated by state armed forces. The Philippine Army and its paramilitary forces allegedly violated several basic rights of the IPs in its effort to flush out the New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), that has turned some of the IP areas into its base of operation.
