Prof. Aurora Javate de Dios is lifelong feminist leader who combines academic excellence and advocacy for women’s human rights and gender equality. She is currently the Senior Project Director of the Women and Gender Institute at Miriam College, where she was former College Dean and currently Professor in International Relations, Migration and Gender studies. She is currently a Co-Convener of the Women’s Peace Collective Prof. De Dios was appointed Chairperson of the Board of the Commissioners of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW) by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. During her stint at the NCRFW, she lobbied for the passage of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act and the Violence Against Women and their Children Act. In the same period she was elected as one of the Experts in the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women where she became Rapporteur. Prof. de Dios represented the Philippines in many international conferences as well as during the negotiations on the UN Optional Protocol on Trafficking of Persons (1998-2000) in Vienna and the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) (2000). Because of her work on trafficking issues, she was appointed by President Arroyo as women representative to the Philippine Interagency Council on Trafficking of Persons. Her recent appointed by Pres. Aquino as Philippines’ Representative for Women’s Rights to the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) in 2010-2015 is yet another recognition of her contribution to the empowerment of women. A member of the External Advisory Board of the Asian Development Bank, Prof. De Dios works with government agencies, international organizations and ASEAN committees as Gender Consultant and Trainer on CEDAW and its Optional Protocol, Gender Mainstreaming and Gender and Migration. |
